The right-sizing move: more free, less work.
The word downsizing undersells it. The goal is a floor plan that fits real life: a main-level bedroom, a short-grass yard or none, the shop, the wall for the grandchildren, the room for visitors. We are not shrinking the life; we are removing the parts that no longer serve it.
I coordinate the mover, the stager, the estate-sale and donation folks, and the handymen who make the home market-ready, and I work beside the family so decisions are shared. I also handle the remote family member watching from another state, with video tours and written updates, so nobody feels left out.
These transitions often start with the adult children and need to end with the parent in charge of the choices. I keep the parent as the decision-maker, bring the family along with clear updates, and never answer the question a grandparent asked me with a plan the grandchild invented. Respect runs both directions.
